Chicago’s Moving Up: City is Top Ten Moving Destination
May 9, 2025
CHICAGO – People are increasingly moving to Illinois, according to an annual survey by moving company Penske Truck Rental that lists Chicago as the eighth most popular moving destination in the U.S.
Chicago last cracked the top ten list in 2021.
Penske, which published its findings Friday, based the rankings on one-way consumer truck rentals last year.
“Those of us who know and love Illinois aren’t surprised that Chicago’s a popular destination. The city’s an axis for innovation, offers a rich culture and deep talent pool, and a wealth of opportunity,” said Intersect Illinois President and CEO Christy George. “Intersect Illinois is primed to bring even more jobs and businesses to our state.”
Those surveyed said they moved based on factors like closer proximity to loved ones, better job opportunities, lower cost of living and needing more space – all great reasons for people and companies to Be in Illinois.
Chicago for the past dozen years has been recognized as the #1 spot by Site Selection magazine for corporate relocations and investment, and Condé Nast Traveler has ranked Chicago as the Best Big City in the U.S. for eight straight years.
