Angela Barnes and Renauda Riddle, co-owners of Andersonville bar Nobody’s Darling, share why Illinois is the best place for business.

In Illinois, we believe that diversity fuels innovation. During Pride Month, we’re especially proud to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs, executives, and business leaders shaping a bright future for all of those who live and work in our state.

From inclusive policies and supportive programs to welcoming neighborhoods and an exceptional quality of life, Illinois is both a world-class business destination and a place where all individuals can live authentically and succeed professionally.

An Inclusive, Empowering State

Perfectly stated by Vice President of Project & Contract Management at ComEd Neena Hemmady: “The state of Illinois is a diverse place. We want people from all backgrounds to thrive. We value humans.” This message rings clear in every corner of our business ecosystem; our state leads with inclusion and compassion — two qualities that matter to Illinoisans regardless of background, orientation, or creed.

Angela Barnes, co-owner of the beloved Andersonville bar (and James Beard Award finalist) Nobody’s Darling, shared the inspiration for the establishment: “We wanted to have a bar that was welcoming to our community — to folks who look like us.” It’s what separates Illinois: offering welcoming spaces for diversity, entrepreneurial innovation, and impact.

A Support System That Means Business

Illinois’ pro-business climate and strong support network are game changers for our state’s executives and entrepreneurs. “I don’t have to reach very far for any kind of support I need,” said JC Grubbs, CEO of Made in Tandem. His tech company thrives within a startup community that values innovation and human connection.

Our business support isn’t just rhetoric. It’s real. Renauda Riddle, Nobody’s Darling co-owner, emphasized: “Illinois does a really great job of making sure you have the tools for success in your business.”

Even during times of crisis, Illinois shows up for its business community. Lewis Warrick, CFO of Goodman Theatre, reflected: “The state of Illinois is probably one of our closest partnerships. They supported us during the pandemic. They provided funds…for this aging building.”

Why LGBTQIA+ Executives and Entrepreneurs Choose Illinois

Beyond our protective policies and economic resources, LGBTQIA+ professionals choose Illinois for what it enables: freedom to lead and succeed! as your authentic self. Nick Libert, founder and CEO of EXIT Strategy Realty, shared his experience moving his business to Illinois from a neighboring state. “I realized that I was not going to be able to be my authentic self [elsewhere]…but here, I’ve been able to step into the fullest version of myself.”

Seeing other LGBTQIA+ leaders thrive is its own form of empowerment. “It was possible to have ownership of property, to have the American Dream,” said Lewis Warrick. That visibility and exposure matters deeply to the generations of today and tomorrow.

Unmatched Quality of Life: Food, Arts, Culture, Entertainment

Rounding out the Illinois advantage is the life it affords residents outside of work. From riverside strolls to global cuisine (recently named #2 in the U.S. by Food & Wine), summertime street festivals, top-tier museums, and historic neighborhoods, Chicago and cities across the state offer a truly unmatched quality of life.

JC Grubbs, CEO of Made in Tandem, explains why Illinois is unmatched in its quality of life — emphasizing safety and inclusivity for all.

Whether you’re exploring downtown Chicago via boat on the Architecture Tour, bike-riding along the lakefront, or discovering a hidden gem in a friendly neighborhood (like Nobody’s Darling!), the richness of life in Illinois is undeniable. As JC Grubbs noted, “That’s the reason we live here.”

“There’s always something to do,” said Nick Libert. “There’s always an opportunity to have fun, get educated, and feel included.”
